HOKA Postal Nationals Announces 2020 National Champions after Record Turnout

Mt. Prospect (IL) Girls and Satellite (FL) Boys crowned as champions of the two-mile high school team competition

(PORTLAND, OR.), November 6, 2020 — HOKA ONE ONE®, a division of Deckers Brands (NYSE: DECK), and RunnerSpace announce the girls of Mt. Prospect XC Club (IL) and the boys of the Satellite XC Club (FL), as the winners of the 2020 HOKA Postal Nationals Championship.

Reviving a tradition from the 1970s, HOKA Postal Nationals empowers high school cross-country teams from every state to compete against each other in a timed two-mile race on the track. To receive a ranking, teams average and then submit the time of their top five finishers to a national online leaderboard powered by RunnerSpace. This competition format provides an opportunity for every team in the country to get a chance to compete for a national championship.

From August 31 through October 31, the 7th annual HOKA Postal Nationals competition presented a motivating breath of normalcy in an otherwise uncertain year for athletes of all creeds. More than 750 teams from across the nation raced and uploaded results to the national leaderboard, setting a program record. In the end, both winning clubs ran HOKA Postal Nationals top-5 all-time effort.

At the top of the rankings, the girls of Mt. Prospect (IL) ran a HOKA Postal Nationals #5 all-time team time of 56:36.80 (11:29 average). On the boys’ side, the Satellite (FL) boys turned in a HOKA Postal Nationals #4 all-time team time of 47:14.20 (9:27 average) to take the top spot. Conroe the Woodlands (TX) finished in 2nd place in both the boys’ and the girls’ team standings.

Coach Doug Butler from Satellite XC Club boys’ team noted, “There are so many great teams around the country, so for our boys to win this year’s HOKA Postal Nationals competition is unbelievable. I have had some great teams over the last 21 years, but this year’s group is truly special. They love to have fun, but they have been off the charts in coachability and cohesiveness. I could not ask more for a great group of young men.

Peter Wintermute, head coach of the Mt. Prospect XC Club girls’ team had this to say: “In the year of 2020, the HOKA Postal Nationals was just what the Mt. Prospect Knights needed to uplift spirits and to enjoy a night under the stadium lights in mid-September. Being named the 2020 Postal National Champions is an incredible honor and recognizes the true unity of the Knights XC program.”

Similar sentiments have been felt throughout the cross country world as virtual racing and training programs were pivotal in maintaining athlete motivation and excitement this year with practices, meets, and in some cases entire seasons canceled.

“We’re extremely encouraged by the Postal Nationals program. For us, this program is all about creating a space for athletes to grow and fall in love with their sport, so for us to be able to provide a platform to create a positive community -when most athletes and teams were unable to meet in typical fashion this year- is an immeasurable opportunity,” said Mike McManus, Senior Sports Marketing Manager at HOKA.
